Catalonia's attempt to separate from Spain and create an independent state has dominated the country's political agenda for more than a decade. It has provoked an unprecedented showdown between the Spanish government and the Catalan authorities, led to heavy and controversial convictions for the pro-independence leaders, raised complex issues of immunity and extradition, and generated frustration and anger on both sides.
